Scandinavia may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of wine. Due to climate change, the wine world is slowly shifting and it is now possible, thanks to warmer weather and new grape varieties, to make wine in Sweden.

The Askesäng White 2021 is a blend of souvignier gris and solaris, two grape varieties that are also found in the Netherlands and thrive in cooler climates. The grapes are harvested in October. They are pressed and fermentation takes place in both barriques and stainless steel tanks. Part of the wine undergoes a malolactic conversion to convert the sharp malic acid into milder lactic acid. This adds complexity and makes the wine rounder in taste. A surprising white wine that goes perfectly with fresh fish dishes.

What the experts say

TheGrapeSurfer (90)

A pleasant introduction to wine from a country that is not exactly known for its viticulture. The Askesang has a rich lemon yellow color. A fresh full wine with notes of apple and tropical fruit. An excellent choice for something Sweden is known for; smorgasbord. So, the next time you think about wine, don't overlook the unexpected. Sweden's Askesang 2021 brings a pleasant surprise to your glass, proving that great wines can come from unlikely places.
